Recyclability

September 26, 2024By MontiPower5 min read

This page sets out what happens to MontiPower® products at the end of their working life: how the Monti League program takes back used belts, which materials are recyclable, how packaging and electrical waste are handled, and how grit-free surface preparation changes the waste picture compared with abrasive blasting.

Recyclability

We are committed to implementing circularity and sustainable practices in our operations. Our circularity program, Monti League, allows clients to return used belts in exchange for credits that can be used to purchase new belts. We also take back tools for repair and refurbishment.

All primary materials used in production — steel wire, cloth, polyamide backing, threading and carton — are recyclable. Furthermore, MontiPower® is working to ensure that these materials are sustainably sourced.

MontiPower® is also Green Dot certified for the correct treatment of waste packaging. These efforts reflect our dedication to promoting sustainable consumption and production, in alignment with SDG Goal 12. In addition, we are WEEE-registered for electric tools in the EU, demonstrating our commitment to responsible and sustainable disposal of electronic waste.

How does the Monti League program work?

Bristle Blaster® and MBX® belts are consumables: the wire bristles wear as they work, and a worn belt no longer produces the same cleaning and profiling result. Instead of treating a worn belt as waste, Monti League lets clients send used belts back to MontiPower® and receive credits that count toward the purchase of new belts. The returned belts go back into a materials stream rather than into general site waste.

The same thinking applies to the drive units. MontiPower® takes back tools for repair and refurbishment, so a machine with a worn component can be returned to service rather than replaced. For routine work, the MontiPower® repair service handles repairs, maintenance and safety checks, and genuine spare parts — belts, accelerator bars, adapters and batteries — keep tools in use for longer. Contact your local distributor or MontiPower® directly for the current Monti League terms in your region.

Which materials in a MontiPower® belt are recyclable?

The primary materials used in production are all recyclable:

Material Where it is used
Steel wire The bristles of Bristle Blaster® belts and MBX® belts (carbon steel or stainless steel)
Cloth Belt construction
Polyamide backing The belt backing that carries the bristles
Threading Belt assembly
Carton Product packaging

Recyclable materials only stay in the loop if they are collected separately, which is why the Monti League return route matters as much as the material choice. MontiPower® is also working to ensure that these materials are sustainably sourced.

Packaging and electrical waste: Green Dot and WEEE

Green Dot for packaging

The Green Dot (Der Grüne Punkt) is a German packaging licensing and recycling system that organises the collection, sorting and recycling of packaging and helps manufacturers meet their packaging obligations. MontiPower®'s Green Dot certification covers the correct treatment of the packaging its products are shipped in.

WEEE registration for electric tools

The EU WEEE Directive (2012/19/EU) requires producers of electrical and electronic equipment to register with national registers, report what they place on the market, and finance the separate collection and proper treatment of the equipment at end of life. MontiPower® is WEEE-registered for its electric tools in the EU, so electric drive units such as the Bristle Blaster® Ultimate Electric fall within this collection and treatment system when they are finally retired.

How this aligns with SDG 12

United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12 is to "ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns". Its target 12.5 calls for substantially reducing waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse by 2030. Monti League (reuse and recycling of belts), tool repair and refurbishment (prevention), recyclable materials, Green Dot packaging and WEEE registration each address part of that target.

Grit-free preparation and the spent-abrasive waste stream

Product recyclability is one side of the picture; the surface preparation process is the other. In abrasive blasting, spent abrasive mixes with the rust and coating removed from the steel, and the whole stream has to be contained, collected and disposed of. Where old coatings contain lead or chromates, that waste stream can be classified as hazardous — and the larger the stream, the larger the problem.

Bristle blasting uses no loose abrasive. What remains to be collected is the material removed from the steel and, over time, worn belts. That does not make the process dust-free — removed rust and coating still become particles and need extraction and respiratory protection where appropriate — but it removes the media from the waste stream entirely. Worn belts can then go back through Monti League. Read more on our sustainability page and in the environmentally friendly mill scale removal guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I return used Bristle Blaster® or MBX® belts?

Yes. Through the Monti League circularity program, clients can return used belts to MontiPower® in exchange for credits that can be used to purchase new belts. The belts are made from recyclable materials — steel wire, cloth, polyamide backing and threading — so returning them keeps those materials out of general site waste. Ask your distributor for the current terms.

Does MontiPower® repair or refurbish old tools?

Yes. MontiPower® takes back tools for repair and refurbishment, so a drive unit with a worn component can be returned to service instead of being scrapped. The repair service also covers maintenance and safety checks, and genuine spare parts such as accelerator bars, adapters and batteries help extend the working life of each tool.

What does WEEE registration mean for MontiPower® electric tools?

Under the EU WEEE Directive (2012/19/EU), producers of electrical equipment register with national registers and finance the separate collection and proper treatment of that equipment at end of life. MontiPower® is WEEE-registered for its electric tools in the EU, so retired electric drive units are covered by that collection and treatment system.

Is bristle blasting more sustainable than abrasive blasting?

Bristle blasting uses no loose abrasive, so there is no spent media to contain, collect and dispose of — only the rust and coating removed from the steel and, over time, worn belts, which can be returned through Monti League. It is not dust-free: removed material still becomes particles, so extraction and respiratory protection remain necessary where the risk assessment requires them.
