Bristle Blasting Technology. What is Bristle Blasting?
Bristle Blasting is a grit-free surface-preparation technology that removes corrosion, mill scale and coatings while simultaneously creating an anchoring surface profile. Forward-curved spring steel bristle tips are accelerated against the surface at high velocity. On impact, they retract immediately, cleaning and profiling the substrate in a single cold-working pass. The result is a clean, profiled and coating-ready surface without loose abrasive media.
What cleanliness can the Bristle Blaster® achieve?
On carbon steel, Bristle Blasting can produce a surface cleanliness comparable to ISO 8501-1 Sa 2½ and Sa 3 and SSPC-SP 10 / SP 5, depending on the initial surface condition, belt selection and operator technique.
Unlike grinding or conventional rotary wire brushing, Bristle Blasting both cleans the surface and creates a defined anchoring surface profile.
What surface profile does Bristle Blasting produce?
The Bristle Blaster® typically produces a 65–85 µm Rz (2.6–3.3 mil) anchoring surface profile, with higher profiles achievable in specific applications and configurations. Because the profile is created by repeated bristle-tip impact rather than abrasion, the surface closely resembles the texture produced by abrasive blasting.
Can Bristle Blasting prepare welds, edges and difficult geometries?
Yes. This is one of the main advantages of the technology. Bristle Blasting can prepare weld seams, heat-affected zones, edges, around bolts, small-diameter pipe, field joints and other areas where conventional blasting is difficult or requires extensive containment.
How long does a Bristle Blaster® belt last?
As a practical guideline, one belt typically provides around one hour of effective working time or approximately 1–1.5 m² of prepared surface for RustGrade B Flashrust according the ISO8501-1.
Actual belt life depends on corrosion level, coating thickness, substrate geometry, pressure, tool speed and operator technique. Correct technique matters: excessive pressure does not improve the result and can shorten belt life.
Can the Bristle Blaster® be used in explosive atmospheres?
Yes, specific Bristle Blaster® pneumatic configurations are available for ATEX IIA applications.
The Bristle Blaster® Pneumatic Ultimate has been independently evaluated for ignition hazards in accordance with the applicable ATEX and EN ISO 80079 requirements. Always verify the certified marking and Declaration of Conformity for the exact tool configuration before specifying it for a hazardous area.
Does Bristle Blasting create sparks?
Bristle Blasting is a mechanical impact process, so it should not simply be described as universally “spark-free.”
For hazardous environments, MontiPower® offers specifically evaluated pneumatic configurations designed for use in designated explosive atmospheres. Always select the tool according to the required ATEX zone and site specification.
How does Bristle Blasting compare with abrasive blasting?
Both methods can create a high-quality coating-ready steel surface. The difference is how and where the work can be done. If outdoor, abrasive blasting is extremely productive on large, open areas where blasting, containment, abrasive supply and waste handling are practical. Bristle Blasting requires no loose abrasive media and is particularly effective for:
- maintenance and repair
- field joints
- welds and edges
- confined or difficult-access areas
- live industrial assets
- offshore and marine work
- locations where abrasive containment is difficult
- smaller areas where mobilising blasting equipment is inefficient
The right comparison is therefore not simply m² per hour. It is the total time, cost and complexity required to deliver a verified coating-ready surface.
Does Bristle Blasting replace sandblasting?
Sometimes, but that isn't the objective. For very large, continuous surfaces with easy access and established blasting facilities, conventional abrasive blasting may remain the most economical method.
Bristle Blasting becomes particularly valuable where conventional blasting becomes difficult, disruptive or disproportionately expensive.

How do I choose the right Bristle Blaster® or MBX® belt?

It matches the substrate, application, required surface condition and tool configuration with the appropriate belt type and width.
Choosing the correct belt is important not only for productivity, but also for achieving a consistent and repeatable surface.
Can Bristle Blasting be used on stainless steel?
Yes. Dedicated stainless-steel bristle belts are available for non-ferrous applications.
Use the correct belt and follow the required contamination-control procedures to avoid introducing carbon-steel contamination onto the stainless surface.
Is there a subsea Bristle Blaster®?
Yes. The Bristle Blaster® Subsea set is designed for underwater surface preparation of offshore and marine assets.
It allows corrosion and coating removal together with mechanical surface profiling directly at the submerged structure.

Why is surface preparation so important?
Because the coating can only perform as well as the surface underneath it.
Correct preparation determines cleanliness, anchoring profile and ultimately coating adhesion and durability.

How do I know whether the prepared surface meets specification?
Don't guess. Just measure it.
Surface cleanliness should be assessed against the applicable standard, while surface profile and other specified parameters should be verified using appropriate inspection equipment.
MontiPower® combines preparation with M-TESTCO® and Great Lakes Gages inspection equipment, allowing contractors and inspectors to verify that the surface is ready before coating.
Can MontiPower® help qualify the method for my coating system or specification?
Yes.
