The operator / technician boundary
The Bristle Blaster Axial manual states the boundary in terms that apply across the range:
All maintenance work on the tool must be carried out exclusively by trained and qualified technical personnel or by the dealer from whom you purchased the tool. Repair or maintenance by unqualified personnel could result in injury and/or damage to the tool. Use only original spare parts when servicing this tool. The use of unauthorized parts or failure to comply with the maintenance instructions will void the warranty and pose a risk of personal injury.
For electric tools the manuals are more specific still: repairs to electrical tools must be carried out by qualified electricians only. On the legacy electric platform, the two carbon brushes must be replaced together, and relubrication is work for trained power tool repairpersons or other qualified tool servicers.
Nothing in this guide asks an operator to open a housing, bypass a guard, or disassemble a drive. If a fault points inside the tool, the correct action is to stop and escalate.
Before every use
- Confirm the belt, adaptor system and accelerator bar are the correct matched set, and that the belt direction is correct.
- Check the protective cap is fitted and secured.
- Check the vibration damping handle is attached. On tools with the optional adjustable handle, confirm the clamp is tight in the chosen position.
- On mains tools, check the dead man’s switch actuates and returns to OFF when released, and that it is not activated when you plug in. Confirm an RCD with a maximum trip current of 30 mA is installed upstream.
- On pneumatic tools, confirm the maintenance unit is in the supply line and the regulator is set correctly.
- Inspect the cable, plug, hose or battery contacts for damage. Damaged electrical equipment is a stop-use condition, not a defer-to-later condition.
Cleaning: ventilation and housing
The one cleaning instruction the electric manuals give explicitly:
To clean the motor, hold the tool firmly and blow compressed air through the rear ventilation slots regularly and thoroughly.
“Regularly” is deliberately not a number. Frequency depends on how dusty the work is. A tool used on heavy corrosion in a confined space needs this far more often than one used intermittently in a workshop. Build the check into the end of each shift and adjust to what you find.
Keep the machine away from dust deposits when switching on and off, and only set it down once the motor has come to a standstill. The machine must not be allowed to draw in additional dust and shavings.
Never immerse the tool in liquid or allow liquid to enter it from outside.
Do not drill into the housing or fit rivets to label the machine — the insulation is no longer ensured. Use stickers.
Electric and cordless specifics
The Ultimate Electric and Ultimate Cordless platforms carry electronic protection that will announce faults through tool behaviour rather than through a warning light. Learning to read that behaviour is most of electric troubleshooting.

The distinction between a major and a slight speed reduction is worth teaching explicitly. They call for opposite responses: one means keep the tool running to cool it, the other means take load off it.
Battery care
Cordless tools run on 18 V packs, available in 5.5 Ah and 8.0 Ah, each weighing 1 kg. Packs marked CAS are fully compatible with the Cordless Alliance System.
- Charge the pack before use. Do not recharge a fully charged pack.
- Ideal storage temperature is between 10 °C and 30 °C. Permissible charging temperature is between 0 °C and 50 °C.
- One flashing LED means the pack is almost flat and must be recharged.
- Remove the battery pack from the machine for shipping, and prevent the contacts from short-circuiting.
- If a pack will not charge, check for excessive or insufficient temperature before assuming a fault.
No runtime figure is published for these tools, and none should be quoted. Runtime depends on the work, the belt and the operator.
Pneumatic specifics
Pneumatic tools need the air supply itself maintained, and this is where most pneumatic faults originate.
- Connect through a maintenance unit — filter, regulator, oiler. This protects the tool from contaminated air.
- Correct air pressure increases service life. Under-pressure produces a tool that feels weak and an operator who compensates with contact pressure.
- Use a hose of adequate diameter and sensible length. The required interior diameter is 9.5 mm / 3⁄8″.
- Disconnect the air supply before any work on the tool, during breaks and when not in use.
- Never use combustible gases or oxygen in place of compressed air.
The only documented lubrication interval
The Bristle Blaster Axial manual gives one, and it is the only lubrication interval anywhere in the current Bristle Blaster document set:
If the tool is new, ensure that the compressed air motor is lubricated before use. If a lubricator connected in series is not used, add a few drops of light oil to the compressed air connection daily.
This applies to that pneumatic tool and does not transfer. There is no monthly interval, no 40-hour interval and no family-wide lubrication schedule for electric or cordless models. Any such schedule circulating in older material should be disregarded — internal lubrication on electric tools is technician work.
Stop-use thresholds
Stop the tool and inspect before continuing if any of the following occur:
- Sudden vibration or unusual noise. The manuals are explicit: stop the machine at once and check the belt for damage or wear.
- Heavy vibration of the rotating belt.
- The adaptor system working loose during operation.
- Overheating, or a major reduction in load speed that does not recover after idling to cool.
- Any damage to the cable, plug, hose, battery pack or contacts.
- Kickback that you did not control, or repeated automatic shutdowns.
- The machine running while the belt does not.
Working through any of these is how a consumable problem becomes a gearbox problem.

Note the pattern. Roughly two thirds of pneumatic faults resolve to the air supply rather than the tool. Before escalating a pneumatic Bristle Blaster, verify compressor output, hose diameter, hose length, filter condition and lubrication — in that order.
When to escalate

The dust generated by the Bristle Blaster® process may contain hazardous materials. Do not dispose of dust with household waste, but only at collection points specifically designed for hazardous waste.
For the tool itself, European Directive 2012/19/EU on waste electrical and electronic equipment applies to power tools: never dispose of a power tool in household waste; used power tools must be collected separately and handed in for environmentally compatible recycling. Observe national regulations for machines, packaging and accessories.
Note the scope carefully. WEEE addresses electrical and electronic equipment. It is not a blanket rule for every consumable — belts, wheels and adaptor parts fall under the waste streams that apply to their materials and to any contamination they carry from the work. Confirm your local rules rather than assuming a single stream covers everything.
FAQs
How often should I lubricate an electric Bristle Blaster?
You should not. There is no operator lubrication task on electric models. Internal relubrication is work for qualified servicers. The daily oiling instruction that exists applies to the pneumatic axial tool’s air connection when no in-line lubricator is fitted.
The tool slowed right down and got hot. Is it broken?
Most likely not. A major reduction in load speed is the overload protection reporting that motor temperature is too high. Let the machine run at idle until it cools. If it recurs quickly, the tool is being overloaded — check contact pressure and standoff.
The tool shut itself off mid-pass.
That is the S-automatic safety shutdown reacting to a sudden current spike, usually a seizure or a kickback event. Release the dead man’s switch, switch on again and continue. Repeated shutdowns mean something is binding — stop and inspect.
Can I clean the tool with a solvent or a pressure washer?
No. Never immerse the tool or allow liquid to enter it. Compressed air through the rear ventilation slots is the documented cleaning method.
Can I replace the carbon brushes myself on a legacy electric model?
Brush replacement is not an operator task, and repairs to electrical tools must be carried out by qualified electricians. Where brushes are replaced, both must be replaced together.
