Tercoo® on an Offshore Platform: Demonstration for a Platform Operator in Malaysia

October 23, 2026By MontiPower1 min read

Malaysia's offshore platforms, pipelines and FPSOs are ageing, and much of the maintenance work is heavy removal: thick coatings, scale and layered rust on steel that cannot be blasted easily offshore. The default tool for this work is still the needle scaler.

The demonstration

MontiPower Malaysia demonstrated Tercoo® to an offshore platform operator in Malaysia. The demonstration was completed with satisfying results.

What Tercoo® brings compared with a needle scaler

Needle scaler Tercoo®
Removal action Bundle of needles, point impacts Rotating discs with tungsten-carbide pins, wider working track
Speed Reference 3 to 4 times faster in MontiPower Malaysia's field experience
Ergonomics Heavy vibration over long shifts More ergonomic for the operator
Next step Separate profiling needed Pairs with the Bristle Blaster® on the same drive for removal + profile

The result matches what we saw on Marathon 550 epoxy, where Tercoo® was three times faster than a needle gun. Speed always depends on coating type and thickness, substrate and operator.

One thing to plan for

Tercoo® is not explosion-proof. On live offshore installations it is used where the work permit allows, or after the area has been made gas-free. For ATEX zones, ask us about the pneumatic Bristle Blaster®.

Why it matters

Offshore maintenance is where prevention rather than cure pays most: every hour saved on removal is an hour less of exposure for the crew and more time to get the new coating right. Replacing the needle scaler with a faster, more ergonomic tool reduces vibration and noise for operators (People), avoids grit blasting and its spent media at sea (Planet), and gives platform teams a heavy-removal method they can carry to the work face (Power).
