Surface Profiling Equipment: Creating and Measuring Anchor Profile
Surface profiling equipment splits into creators and measurers. Creators: angular grit blasting, the Bristle Blaster® (65–85 µm Rz, grit-free, hand-held) and drum scarifiers. Measurers: replica tape to ASTM D4417 Method C (the field standard), depth micrometers, profilometers and ISO 8503 comparators. Specifications require both a created profile and a documented measurement.
Surface profiling has two halves: the equipment that creates an anchor profile, and the equipment that proves it. Creating the profile
Abrasive blasting with angular media cuts the deepest profiles and remains the yard standard for new construction. Bristle-belt tools — the Bristle Blaster® — generate a controlled 65–85 µm Rz profile (up to ~120 µm with the accelerator bar) while cleaning, hand-held, grit-free, usable in-service and in ATEX zones. Drum scarifiers mill a directional profile fast on open flats but remove sound metal. Needle scalers and grinders clean without producing a usable profile — which is why St 3 surfaces fail profile specs.
Measuring the profile
Replica tape (ASTM D4417 Method C, pressed and read with a spring micrometer) is the field standard: cheap, documentable, archivable — the method MontiPower® uses to verify Bristle Blaster® results. Depth micrometers (Method B) read peak-to-valley directly on site. Stylus and optical profilometers (lab and QA) deliver full Rz/Ra traces — the 3D confirmation behind our published profile data.
