CP10 Robot for a Japanese Shipbuilder: Weld-Bead Treatment and Coating Sweep

October 25, 2026By MontiPower Japan1 min read

Two jobs on a hull take a lot of skilled hand work. Weld beads have to be treated before coating, without grinding too deep. And before recoating, existing paint often needs a light sweep: smoothing and thinning the old coating rather than removing it.

One robot, interchangeable tooling

The CP10 is a multifunctional surface-preparation robot. It carries interchangeable brush heads, so one machine covers several tasks:

  • Bristle Blaster® brushes for cleaning and profiling
  • MBX® brushes
  • Dedicated metal brushes for coating removal
  • Brushes that grind weld beads down a little at a time, under control
  • Long-bristle stainless-steel brushes for sweeping existing coating

The demonstrations

MontiPower Japan demonstrated both jobs for the shipbuilder: robotic treatment around weld beads, and a sweep of the existing coating with long-bristle stainless-steel brushes, which smooths and thins the old coating in a controlled way. That gave the customer a brush-based answer to its sweep requirement, applied by a robot instead of by hand. The shipbuilder chose the CP10.

Why it matters

Weld-bead and sweep work done consistently gives the new coating a sound base, so it lasts: prevention rather than cure for the vessel. A robot doing the repetitive brush work takes operators off ladders and away from vibration and dust (People). Brushes instead of grit mean no spent abrasive in the dock (Planet). And one machine with interchangeable heads gives the yard more capability per investment (Power).
