Specified by name: the Bristle Blaster® in the CCGS Limnos drydock specification

The Bristle Blaster® is increasingly written into official ship-repair specifications by name. In the Canadian Coast Guard’s 2023 drydock specification for the CCGS Limnos, kinetic-impact coating removal and profiling — “i.e. Bristle Blaster” — is the specified method for compartments and tanks where grit-blasting is prohibited.

The CCGS Limnos 2023 Drydock Specification (F2599-23002, Revision 1.0) was prepared by Marine Engineering, Integrated Technical Services, Canadian Coast Guard, for a six-week docking work period. Across several coating-repair items, the specification names kinetic-impact bristle tooling as the required surface-preparation method where abrasive blasting cannot be used.

Where the Bristle Blaster® is specified

Echo-sounder compartments (§15.9.5.3.2):

“…profile all bare steel within the echosounder compartments. Grit-blasting must not be used. An industrial laser ablation or kinetic impact coatings removal and profiling tool i.e. ‘Bristle Blaster’ must be used. Grinders and sanders may be used only where laser ablation or kinetic impact tools are unable to access the coatings, as these methods can imbed impurities into the steel substrate and provide a less uniform holding profile.”

Tank interiors (§16.1.3.4.1):

“Due to the location and size of tanks, grit blasting must not be used. An industrial laser ablation or kinetic impact coatings removal and profiling tool i.e. ‘Bristle Blaster’ must be used. Severely corroded areas … may first be removed with a needle gun.”

Tank repair around hot work (§16.1.3.7):

“Bristle Blaster or equivalent kinetic impact coatings removal and profiling tool must be used… Surface profile must be a minimum of 1.5 mils (38 microns), but preferably 3 mils (75 microns) and surface cleanliness of SSPC-SP11.”

Why it matters

The rationale in the specification mirrors what surface-preparation engineers see in the field: in confined, access-limited or hot-work-sensitive areas, abrasive grit-blasting is impractical or prohibited, and grinders or sanders can embed impurities and leave a less uniform profile. A kinetic-impact bristle tool removes failed coatings and generates a defined anchor profile in a single, grit-free step — which is exactly why it appears by name in the specification.
