Coating Removal: Methods and Tools Compared
There are five coating-removal families: power tools (small touch-ups), abrasive blasting (full structures in a yard), chemical stripping (delicate parts), thermal methods (thick systems), and bristle-belt tools. For repairs and in-service steel, the Tercoo + Bristle Blaster sequence removes coatings and leaves a 65–85 µm Rz anchor profile in the same pass, with no media or containment.
Coating removal is the first half of every recoating job — and the half where most damage happens. Every method strips paint, epoxy or elastomer from steel; they differ in what they do to the substrate underneath, how much containment they demand, and whether the surface that remains is ready for the next coating or just bare. The five families
Mechanical power tools — grinders, needle scalers, wire brushes. Cheap and everywhere, but they burnish or gouge, top out at St 3 cleanliness, and leave no usable anchor profile. Abrasive blasting — open grit, shot or vapor blasting. Unbeaten for full structures in a yard: fast on large areas, deep profile. The cost is containment, media disposal, dust, and shutdowns on in-service assets. Chemical stripping — effective on complex geometry and delicate substrates, slow on thick industrial systems, with disposal and HSE burdens; leaves no profile. Thermal methods — induction disbonding and laser ablation. Induction is fast on thick coatings over steel but needs recoat-ready follow-up; laser is precise and clean but slow and capital-heavy. Neither generates a profile. Bristle-belt and rotating-disc tools — the MontiPower® family: Tercoo® rotating discs strip thick coatings, bitumen and heavy rust as the pre-step; the Bristle Blaster® removes the remaining coating and corrosion while generating a 65–85 µm Rz anchor profile in the same pass; the MBX® handles automotive paint and underseal; the Vinyl Zapper® takes vinyl, adhesive and foils off without touching the paint below.
A note on names: this rotating bristle principle is sometimes described as impact-based wire technology, high-impact wire cleaning, or mechanical bristle blasting. Different words, same mechanism — bristle tips striking the surface with kinetic energy comparable to blast media, then retracting, which is what separates it from brushes that drag.

Choosing by coating
- Thick elastomer, bitumen, multi-layer legacy systems: Tercoo® first, Bristle Blaster® to finish and profile.
- Industrial coatings on steel that will be recoated: Bristle Blaster® — removal and anchor profile in one operation, comparable to ISO 8501-1 Sa 2½ & Sa 3.
- Automotive paint, rust and underseal on panels: MBX® — strips without warping the sheet.
- Vinyl, wraps, adhesive and foils: Vinyl Zapper® — the paint underneath survives.
- A whole hull or bridge in a blast yard: abrasive blasting — at that scale, it is still the right tool.

How do you remove coatings without damaging the steel?
Choose a method that works cold and controlled. Bristle-belt removal strips the coating by impact and rebound without milling or overheating the substrate; grinders gouge, and blasting can embed grit. On delicate or thin material, reduce aggression before you reduce coverage.
Can industrial coatings be removed without blasting?
