Before you touch the tool: isolation
Disconnect the tool from its power source before changing the belt or adaptor system. The machine must be switched off and the spindle at a standstill. On pneumatic tools, disconnect the air supply — not only before belt changes but also during breaks in work and whenever the tool is not in use.
On mains-powered tools, check that the rated voltage and frequency on the rating label match your supply, and install a residual current device with a maximum trip current of 30 mA upstream.
The components, and which part numbers go together
Three items have to agree with each other: the belt, the adaptor system that carries it, and the accelerator bar behind it.

Each adaptor system ships with its own bag containing a 5 mm Allen key to DIN 911, the correct screw and a serrated lock washer. The serrated washer is not optional — it is what stops the assembly working loose in service.
Identifying the belt you are holding
On standard Bristle Blaster belts the belt itself is red in both wire materials. The inner ring is the material tell: red means carbon spring steel, white means stainless. Both carry the printing Bristle Blaster® | EN1083-2 | MONTI, with MONTI | Made in Germany on the inner ring.
Matching the accelerator bar — the step most often missed
The accelerator bar matches on two axes, not one: belt width and wire material. That is why four standard part numbers exist rather than two.
The manuals are explicit on the material point: for Bristle Blaster® stainless steel belts, use only the stainless-steel accelerator bar. Steel bars are hardened carbon steel; stainless bars are stainless 1.4034. Running a stainless belt against a carbon steel accelerator bar introduces a cross-contamination route on work where stainless integrity is the reason the stainless belt was specified in the first place.
Width matters mechanically. The 23 mm bars are 40 mm long; the 11 mm bars are 24 mm. Both are 10 mm in diameter with an M6 internal thread, so a bar of the wrong length will thread on happily and sit wrong behind the belt.
Fitting the adaptor system and belt
- With the tool isolated and the spindle stationary, loosen and remove the screw and serrated washer, then open the adaptor system.
- Insert the belt with the bristle tips pointing in the direction of rotation. Every belt and every adaptor carries a direction marking — check it against the spindle rotation rather than assuming.
- Apply the outer part of the adaptor system, fit the serrated lock washer and tighten the screw with the supplied Allen key.
- Confirm the assembly is seated square and turns freely by hand with no contact against the guard.
Direction is the single most consequential detail on this page. A belt fitted backwards will rotate, sound normal and remove some surface contamination, but the bristle tips will not strike and rebound as designed, so no anchor profile is produced. On the Decapower® Bristle Head the consequence is more serious still: reverse rotation there can cause serious damage to the tool and injury to the operator.
Setting the accelerator bar gap
Across the electric and cordless Bristle Blaster manuals the instruction is the same: maintain the accelerator bar approximately 10 mm from the work surface. If the accelerator bar is too far from the surface, performance drops significantly.
This is the setting that converts a rotating brush into a bristle blasting tool. The bar is what accelerates the bristle tips into the surface; move it away and the tips lose the acceleration that produces the impact. Operators who report the tool “polishing rather than profiling” are very often holding it at the wrong standoff rather than using a worn belt.
Guard, handle and switch checks
- Always work with the protective cap attached. It slides over the cams on the front end and secures with the side screw.
- Always work with the vibration damping handle attached. The standard position is the handle mounting plate on top of the machine. An optional adjustable handle clamps over the front end and rotates through a full 360 degrees, which is useful for awkward working positions.
- Before plugging in, check the dead man’s switch actuates correctly and returns to OFF when you release pressure on it. Make sure it is not activated at the moment you plug in.
- To start, release the safety clip by pushing it backwards, then press the dead man’s switch. To stop, simply release the pressure.
- Hold the tool by the tool body and the vertical handle simultaneously.
Do not run a fixed-speed tool at “low rpm” as a post-installation check. The Ultimate Electric and Ultimate Cordless platforms have a preset, fixed speed with electronics that hold it near-constant under load. There is no low-speed setting to test at. The correct post-installation check is a visual and manual one: direction, seating, fixings, guard, handle, switch.
Model-specific differences
Double configurations
The double adaptor system (AS-016) is built from two 23 mm adaptor systems joined by a connector piece and secured with an M6 × 60 screw and serrated lock washer. It runs two 23 mm belts. The matching accelerator bar (ZU-068) is 65 mm long and is specified for use with two steel BB-033 belts.
Axial belts are handed
The axial platform introduces a selection dimension that does not exist on the standard Bristle Blaster: belts are supplied in “right” and “left” versions and must be matched to the tool. In the steel red family that is BB-098R and BB-099L; in stainless red, BB-108R and BB-109L; the lime green family carries DB-105, DB-106 and DB-107 in steel and DB-108, DB-109 and DB-110 in stainless. Handedness is not interchangeable, and a handed belt fitted to the wrong side is a direction error by another name.
Pneumatic
Connect through a maintenance unit and confirm the supply before fitting. Correct air pressure increases service life. Do not use combustible gases or oxygen in place of compressed air.

Stop-use trigger. If vibration or unusual noise occurs suddenly, stop the machine at once and check the belt for damage or wear. Do not work through it.
Common mistakes
- Fitting a stainless belt against a steel accelerator bar because both threads are M6.
- Reusing a serrated lock washer that has already been through several belt changes.
- Treating the accelerator bar standoff as a comfort preference rather than a setting.
- Assuming direction from the previous belt instead of checking the arrow.
- Fitting a handed axial belt to the wrong side.
- Marking a tool by drilling the housing or fitting rivets. This compromises the insulation — use stickers.
FAQs
How tight should the centre screw be?
Tighten with the supplied 5 mm Allen key against a correctly seated serrated lock washer. No manual in the current set specifies a torque figure, so do not work to an invented one. If the assembly comes undone in service, the cause is usually a missing or worn washer rather than insufficient torque.
Can I use an 11 mm belt on a 23 mm adaptor system?
No. The adaptor systems differ in width — 30 mm for the 23 mm version, 15 mm for the 11 mm version — and each is supplied with the screw length that suits it.
How do I tell a stainless belt from a steel one once it is fitted?
By the inner ring: white for stainless, red for carbon spring steel. This is worth confirming before the belt goes on, because the ring is harder to see once assembled.
Does the accelerator bar wear out?
Accelerator bars and adaptor systems are replaceable consumables and the troubleshooting tables list a worn adaptor system as a cause of belt vibration. No manual or datasheet in the current set gives a replacement interval, so inspect them at every belt change rather than working to a fixed count.
