Field test, Rio de Janeiro, October 2026: MontiPower Brasil used Tercoo® at customer DCL to remove Jotun Jotachar 1709 passive fire protection (about 2,500 µm) and a three-layer ThermoWrap / PFP / ThermoWrap system (about 3,500 µm) down to the steel, with no abrasive blasting.
Thick passive fire protection (PFP) and composite repair wraps are among the hardest coatings to take off steel. They are built to stay on: tough, thick and well bonded. When an asset needs inspection, repair or recoating, the material still has to come off. On 21 October 2026, the MontiPower Brasil team ran two removal tests with Tercoo® at our customer DCL in Rio de Janeiro.
| Test | Coating system | Thickness | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jotun Jotachar 1709 PFP | about 2,500 µm | Removed to steel |
| 2 | ThermoWrap / PFP / ThermoWrap | about 3,500 µm | Removed to steel, all three layers |
Test 1: Jotun Jotachar 1709 PFP, about 2,500 µm
Jotachar 1709 is a Jotun epoxy passive fire protection coating. The test pipe carried a very hard, thick layer of about 2,500 microns. Tercoo® cut through the full PFP build-up and exposed the steel substrate across the test area.

Test 2: ThermoWrap / PFP / ThermoWrap, about 3,500 µm
The second test was a three-layer system: ThermoWrap, a PFP layer, then ThermoWrap again, about 3,500 microns in total. Tercoo® worked through all three layers, and the stepped edges of the test area show each layer down to bare steel.
ThermoWrap is an engineered, field-saturated repair system: a proprietary fibreglass cloth applied with a two-part epoxy and a high-modulus filler. It is used in plants, refineries, tank farms, terminals and offshore assets as a pressure-containing repair to seal leaks and as a reinforcing repair that restores pipe strength in the axial and circumferential directions, including on tees, flanges and varying pipe diameters. A fibre-reinforced wrap like this is hard to remove mechanically.

Why Tercoo® for thick coatings
Tercoo® uses flexible rotating discs fitted with tungsten-carbide pins that strike the surface with a controlled impact. It is built for the bulk removal of thick paint, epoxy, bitumen and heavy rust. It needs no loose abrasive, no blast pot and no containment for spent media.
Tercoo® is the heavy-removal step. Where the new coating specification requires a defined cleanliness and anchor profile, the Bristle Blaster® follows on the same drive unit: the Two-Step MontiPower Method.
These results apply to the coatings, equipment and conditions of this test. Results on other projects depend on coating type and thickness, substrate condition, access, operator technique and the required surface standard.
