A rotating tool usually means grinding or brushing — processes that rub. Blasting works by impact. The reason one family of rotating tools genuinely replaces sandblasting on steel is that it was engineered to impact, not rub. Here is the mechanism, and the evidence.
Why impact matters
Coatings anchor mechanically. Grit blasting works because each particle strike leaves a microscopic crater; millions of strikes produce the 50–85 µm Rz texture that doubles as a mechanical key. A tool that rubs — grinder, brush, sander — removes rust but leaves a smeared, polished surface with nothing for the coating to grip. That is why most power tools fail coating specifications even when the steel looks clean.
The rebound principle
The Bristle Blaster® bristles are angled forward and tensioned against an accelerator bar. As the belt rotates, each tip is bent back, loaded like a spring, then released just before contact — striking the surface at high velocity and rebounding immediately instead of dragging. The measured evidence
This is documented, not marketing: the 2009 NACE paper established the fundamentals; 3D optical analysis characterized the crater texture; the NACE comparison against grinders and needle guns showed the difference panel by panel; and residual-stress research found a bonus blasting does not offer: the process cold-works the surface into compressive stress, improving fatigue resistance.
What this replaces in practice
Everything that makes small-scale blasting disproportionate: the pot, the media, the containment, the disposal, the permits. One operator, a power connection, and the surface is cleaned and profiled in the same pass — including inside ATEX zones, at height, and on in-service assets. And what it does not
Above roughly 5,000 m² of continuous open plate, blasting throughput wins. If a specification names a media type rather than a surface result, the conversation is with the specifier, not the toolbox. Honest boundaries make the rest of the claim credible.
